After Naruto wins his match, he applies Hinata's ointment to his wounds. Hinata then offers Kiba her medicine, but he tells her to worry about herself. His advice: forfeit if her opponent is Gaara or Neji.
Sure enough, Hinata's match is against her cousin, Neji. The family lines have been feuding since the death of Neji's father. Hinata is of the main line, the Souke, while Neji is of the branch family, the Bunke. The Souke have cultivated special abilities to give them the advantage over the Bunke.
Neji encourages Hinata to forfeit knowing full well she only participated in the Chuunin because of her teammates. He can see that not only does she have no self confidence, but she doesn't want to fight.
Kurenai remembers back to when she asked to train Hinata. Her 5 year old sister, Hanabi, lies on the floor, tired out from training. Her father encourages Kurenai to take her... after all, she was beaten by Hanabi and is not wanted there.
Neji repeats that Hinata will never change... a person can't change who they are. They can struggle, but they can't escape reality. He reads her with his Byakugan, a Hyuga trait more powerful than the Sharingan... she doesn't want to fight... He notices she's trembling in fear. She can't even look at him. Action by action he tries to intimidate her by reading her body language.
Naruto soon has enough of the mind games and screams out that Neji is wrong. A person can change and Hinata should stand up and fight. She thanks him, and Neji immediately recognizes her change of attitude. Both take their Hyuga fighting stance in Byakugan mode and prepare to demonstrate Konoha's strongest taijutsu style.
Blow by blow the fight begins as Hinata holds her own briefly. Sideline commentary explains that the Hyuga style is different from the taijutsu that Lee and Gai use. They use Goken (Iron fist) that works by breaking bones from the outside. The Hyuga style deals internal damage, a Soft Hand style that destroys from within.
Naruto cheers Hinata on as Lee explains that chakra is carried in channels similar to blood vessels to each part of the body. Channels wrap around inner organs, so if the channels are attacked, the inner organs are damaged as well. Intrigued, Sakura asks how they can attack chakra channels. Kakashi explains that the Byakugan can see the energy flow. They can then release their own chakra from the flow of their hands and make it flow into the other's body, directly damaging the opponent's chakra channel.
The match continues with the two exchanging blows.
